Beavers

Did you know that Beavers became extinct in Scotland around 400 years ago due to hunting and habitat loss? Now they are being introduced as part of a trial.
We have been learning all about it. The trial will last for 5 years and you can read about it at www.scottishbeavers.org.uk.
Beavers are a keystone species which means they affect the survival of other wildlife by changing the habitats and creating new ones so we looked at these effects.

learning about the issues.

Beavers build dams to change the flow of water or to slow it down. We worked in groups to plan what materials would be suitable for a dam. We then collected the materials and worked together to build our own dams and test and evaluate how successfull they were.

Lots of people were consulted before the trial begain and we had lots of fun taking on these roles and arguing for and against the trial. It was our first time debating and we did very well. We will keep you posted.
