Projects - Canals - 2010

We have started our Canal topic and the children are very interested in it. They helped to plan the topic by compiling a list of questions that they wanted to know. Poppy and Ellie are very interested in the bats that live around the canals and have decided to build a bat cave. You can see them getting ready to start and we will show pictures of the finished product later.

Preparing to make a bat-cave

We have been using the internet and books to find out lots of information about animals, boats, bridges etc and have already begun our personal projects which we will show as they come in.

Gathering information

Ships had to make a long journey around the north of Scotland before canals were built. We were using string here to compare the distances and measure them using a scale ruler.

We have been trying to build canal bridges from newspaper and showing how well we work as a group.

Mr Ormsby came to visit us last Friday for our canal topic. He is from the Seagull Trust which use canal boats to take disabled children and adults on trips. He told us about the trust and also gave us some more history about canals. It was a very interesting talk and the children all enjoyed it.
