Literacy Week 2010

We have had great fun during literacy week this year. We have been reading the Pied Piper of Hamelin by Robert Browning. We all enjoyed the story and spent a long time discussing the morals of the Pied Piper and the Mayor.

We wrote wanted posters and advertisements for a Rat Catcher, after discussing what a good quality poster and ad should look like.
We discussed unfamiliar words in the story and found meanings for some of them, then we retold the story using storyboards.

In our writing we used the carousel technique to brainstorm ideas for a range of imaginative stories connected to the Pied Piper and then we wrote the stories individually.
We also studied the format of newspaper stories and then wrote a report of the missing children of Hamelin.

Mrs Robertson came in to talk about different books she likes and read us a story that she had written herself.

Mr Valentine visited as well to teach us how to look after our books. We learned how to store them properly, keep them away from water and fire and never to fold down the edges!

Today the P3 children performed their assembly all about books and it was really good. They were encouraging us to use a wide variety of different books to help us with our learning and not just to go straight onto the internet. Angus couldn't attend because he is in Rio at the moment so he sent his cousin Hamish.

Everyday we ‘dropped everything and read’ for 10 minutes which was great. Mrs Boyiatjis got her book finished! It has been a good week.
The week ended with a book character parade and competition. Her are some of our outfits. Didn't they do great? I love Elly with her horse (Kirsten at the back and Sophie H at the front).
